MY FAVOURITE LOCAL HOTSPOTS
I love living in Gerrard’s Cross, there is a great community feel about this small town. We have everything we need on our doorstep including some excellent restaurants Lomito , Jack and Alice and The Grocer and great independent shops Heidi and Hudson, Lisa La Moda, My Boutique and the fab children's shop E-side that cater for everything from organic falafel wraps, haute couture design and fabulous facials at the Deluxe Clinic. Also, when we feel the need to branch out, we can jump onto a Chiltern express train and be in Marylebone in 18 minutes! While we have lost some lovely shops, many more superb ones have shot up to replace them and today I am sharing some of my local favourites.
Jack and Alice – Wine Bar & Pantry Dining
40 Packhorse Road
This jaunty wine bar was a most welcome addition to the town when it opened just over two years ago and it’s become a regular haunt for my mum chums and I to catch up over a decent coffee, enjoy a cheeky glass of Shiraz or share a cheese platter. It is also a great place to celebrate a birthday as they regularly hold fun nights, like Alice’s Gin Night or Jack’s Shack Burger Night or even, if it’s your thing, a special cheesy Fondue Menu. Definitely my go-to place in town, and also perfect for a quick bite before a trip to the Everyman cinema across the road.
Heidi and Hudson – Independent Mens and Womenswear Boutique
68 Packhorse Road
This is a family-run business that offers cool, hip and practical affordable luxury wear for all ages as well as being a perfect place to shop away any baby-blues! They always seem to anticipate what’s on-trend and rarely can I walk by without falling in love with something in their carefully curated window displays. If I am ever in need of quick lovely present for a friend, I always head to H&H for a fabulous scarf, belt or funky T-shirt.
Lomito – Argentinian Steakhouse
55 Packhorse Road
This sophisticated new Argentinian Steakhouse opened with a bang this summer, bringing a corner of glitz and swank to the Home Counties. From its sexy little bar serving divine cocktails to the superb menu of top-class steaks, it’s hard to fault. But it is not cheap and if you are out with friends and the wine is flowing, expect to pay the price. However, Lomito has become a firm favourite with my family, not least because my boys can’t get enough of the Menu de Niño, three courses including rump steak at the very decently priced £6.75. They also do gift vouchers which make great presents.
Lisa La Moda – Women’s Fashion Boutique
12 Packhorse Road
Lisa La Moda is one of the fashion shops on the high street that really stands out with a really unique range of clothes. If you have a big event coming up where you need that special dress - this is the place to stop by. Lisa and her team do their best to find that perfect dress making you feel very special in the process. The shop is warm, inviting and has a fantastic range to choose from that really does cater for all ages. Just pop in, you will be surprised what you find in there.
Health and Beauty
58-60 Packhorse Road
This stalwart on the high street don’t have an official website but they don’t need it with their solid reputation. Those in the know looking for help with a quick medical query, seek out the very excellent advice of pharmacist Arvind or his equally professionally sound son Sanil. They can give advice on a range of medical conundrums and will always take the time for a quick private consultation or direct you to make a doctor’s appointment where necessary.
5 Station Road
The invigoration of the high street continues with this new casual but buzzy brunch, lunch and real coffee house. It’s the third deli-style store in a small chain that prides itself in fresh, seasonal food like roasted aubergine, garlic yoghurt, za’atar and pomegranate seed salad. Or maybe you’d prefer the chargrilled broccoli with chilli and flaked almonds. The cakes are also divine and a must try is the pistachio olive oil cake accompanied with a proper barista-style flat white.
Deluxe Clinic – Luxury Face and Skin clinic
3 Marsham Way
Another newcomer to the town but my guess is they will be around a long time as they offer something lacking in Gerrard’s Cross - an affordable luxury beauty salon. Whatever treatment you need or want - they do it. Simona, the owner has really got it right. Customer service is second to none and I can vouch they can deliver great results on skin treatment. They also have the latest Soprano ice laser hair removal machine that is so amazing. It really is completely pain free and achieves immediate results - lots of men use it too for getting rid of unwanted hair.
E-Side – Family Store for Modern, Organic Family Living
14 Station Road
This new eco-independent boutique specialises in high-end modern sustainable design for children. Inside this tiny store you will find contemporary children’s furniture including beds, mattresses and chairs as well as wooden toys, lights, gifts, kids clothing - all made in Europe and boasting organic and chemical-free materials. What’s not to love? Definitely a place to treat your little darlings. They will love you forever, and you will feel better for buying a long-lasting, quality, product.
I also need to mention a fabulous clothes shop in Farnham Common. I love ‘My Boutique’. A lovely lady called Simone Markham owns it. It has new stock all the time and keeps bang on trend and the best thing is it’s so affordable you can keep going back for more. As it has been such a success Simone has now opened another shop in Bourne End. Check out her weekly vlogs on Facebook.
